Tornado Recovery

Abide Disaster Recovery is calling on the community to rally behind storm survivors like Billy Wright, a U.S. Army veteran and retired police officer from Chilton County, whose home was destroyed by a tornado earlier this year.

Wright proudly served in the Army before dedicating decades in law enforcement in both Alabama and Texas. After retiring, he moved back to his hometown of Maplesville, hoping to settle into a quiet life near family. He purchased property just outside downtown — only to discover that the existing structure on the land was uninsurable, leaving him without coverage.

He now relies on permanent caregiver assistance due to a debilitating back disease. As he was adapting to this new reality, another hardship struck. In March 2025, Wright’s property was destroyed by a tornado. With support from United Way, the Red Cross, Redemption at K Springs, and the Birmingham Hispanic Catholic Church, he purchased a 10-by-20 shed and it was converted into a temporary living space with a wheelchair accessible ramp. His daughter, who had been serving as his in-home caregiver, was also displaced and can no longer stay with him in a place of that size.

Abide Disaster Recovery is now partnering with Wright to build a permanent, safe, and fully accessible home. After securing funding, the next step is constructing a single-level, wheelchair-accessible home with four bedrooms and two bathrooms — designed to accommodate Wright, his daughter, and her two children. With an upcoming surgery scheduled that will likely leave him wheelchair-bound, securing funds is urgent.

The total cost of the new home is estimated at $125,000. Abide Disaster Recovery is actively seeking donations to support this effort. Any funds raised beyond what is needed for Wright’s home will be used to assist other storm survivors facing similar hardships.
